Økonomisk grundenhed
Provstiudvalget er et gammelt organ i folkekirkens struktur. Det blev indført i 1922, men meget har ændret sig siden. Før handlede udvalgenes arbejde primært om at syne præstegårdene og fastsætte den kommunale kirkeskat. Det betød, at valgene ofte handlede om at få valgt en håndværker og nogen med forstand på økonomi.
Ramme om arbejdet
Fra mest at fokusere på økonomien er provstiudvalgene i dag mange steder blevet en ramme for samarbejde mellem menighedsråd. Det kan dreje sig om både praktiske ting som at få kalket kirker eller ordne regnskaber og kirkelige emner. Eksempelvis er der menighedsråd, der sammen laver projekter for børn i kirken.

Provstiet er horisonten
Et provstiudvalgsmedlem er ikke først og fremmest repræsentant for sit eget sogn, men skal have provstiet som horisont. Det er altså provstiet som helhed, man skal have for øje, når man træffer beslutninger og prioriterer provstiets pengekasse.

Det handler om holdninger
Når provstierne i højere grad er ramme for samarbejde imellem menighedsråd, betyder det også, at valget til udvalgene er et holdningsvalg. Kandidaterne har stadig brug for både en praktisk sans og forståelse for økonomi. Men først og fremmest handler valgene om holdninger til, hvad man vil lave sammen i provstiet. Skal man fremme samarbejdet, flytte nogle af menighedsrådenes opgaver eller sætte en fælles kurs for kirken i provstiet?

Provstens rolle
Man kan vælge provsten som formand for provstiudvalget. Eller man kan lade posten gå til en af de valgte læge medlemmer. Gør man det, får man adskilt provstiudvalgets opgaver og ansvar fra provstens og man får en tydelig arbejdsfordeling. Provsten løser sine forpligtelser som udvalgets forretningsfører og provstiudvalgets formand leder udvalgets arbejde.
